This is a great formation that will allow you to have 4 Wide Receivers on the field instead of a 3 Wide Receivers and a Tight End; this is a terrific formation to come out in if you want to utilize 4 WRs for other formation that you can audible to, without having to use a slower TE.
This play is also great against the popular Cover 4 Drop Show 2, but, it works well against other Cover 4 defenses as well. There are several setups for it, I am going to show you 2 that I like to use.
Setup # 1:
- Streak right side Slot WR
- Put right side outside WR on Slant route
- Put left side outside WR on a Drag route
- Pass Block Runningback
This setup gives you a high-low read on the left side of the field (unless you flip the play, then it will be the opposite), as well as a the Slant route coming across the field in the other direction. You will notice that the Slot WR on the right side will get above or below almost every zone coverage in the game. Keep in mind, you opponent can “user” the route to take it away, or make additional adjustments such as Quarter flats, man up route, etc., that might take the route away.
Setup # 2:
- Streak right side Slot WR
- Put right side outside WR on Slant route
- Put left side outside WR on a Drag route
- Pass Block Runningback
- Motion over right side Slot WR to the Left
This setup is great at taking a “user” out of the equation who is defending over the middle of the field. I do like to be on the right hashmark if I am running the play to the left, and left hashmark if I running the play to the right. You will want to motion over you Slot WR, let him get set, once you hike the ball you will want to throw the ball on his “break” so that it creates separation with the defender. You will find this gets open again almost all AI zone defenses.
